Undertaker Les's Deadly Reg Number Plate Shocks His Customers

AN UNDERTAKER is turning up at the homes of grieving families in a flash sports car - complete with the grim reaper on his personalised number plate.

Les Boyce, 33, says the cartoon image of the angel of death carrying a briefcase and trademark scythe is his secret weapon against the gloom and doom of his job.

Les, who works for John Roach Funeral Services in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, said: "If I didn't have a sense of humour I'd go off my head.

"My son-in-law gave me the plates a few weeks ago and I put them on as a joke.

"It's not as if it was a picture of a skull and crossbones. Everyone who knows me will know the image on my registration plate wasn't ever meant to be serious."

But his new plates have divided opinion with some sharing the joke while critics have taken offence at the registration on his Mazda RX-8.

Les added: "The last thing I want to do is cause offence and I apologise if I have upset anyone.

"It wasn't my intention to cause harm or grief. It was meant as a light-hearted joke."

But one critic, who does not share Les's sense of humour, said: "You've got to wonder if this guy is in the right line of work if he thinks this is funny or appropriate.

"Does he think families that have just lost a loved one will be in the mood for a wee laugh at his daft regi. Or does he not care that they might think it's totally crass and insensitive?"

Dominic Maguire, of the National Association of Funeral Directors, said: "He isn't doing anything wrong professionally so I can't comment."

Neil Bibby, councillor for Johnstone North, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch, added: "No one has come to me with any complaints about the registration plate."
