Plaid AM Chris Franks has asked Secretary of State for Wales Paul Murphy to legalise the display of the Welsh flag on vehicle number plates.

In 2001 Paul Murphy welcomed the announcement that the display of national flags on number plates would be made legal saying: "There are more than 1.4 million vehicles
registered in Wales and this announcement means that the Dragon and the other permitted symbols will soon be seen throughout the roads of Britain and Europe, promoting still further Wales's distinct identity."

However this New Labour promise was never kept, says Mr Franks.

"As Paul Murphy welcomed the announcement back in 2001, it is time he and his Westminster government colleagues completed this unfinished business and changed the law to allow our flag to be displayed on vehicle number plates. It is ridiculous that Welsh flags cannot be displayed on Welsh number plates. This is yet another reason why Wales needs a proper Parliament.

"Over a thousand people have signed up to the campaign already and the numbers are growing daily. People want to show their pride in their nation and many people are
confused about the current legislation. The Westminster Government should do as they promised over 6 years ago and act to end this unnecessary confusion."

Fellow Plaid AM Janet Ryder launched an online petition on St David's day calling on the UK government to honour a pledge made back in 2001 to legislate to allow the display of national flags on vehicle number plates.
