UK CAR REGISTRATIONS HEALTHY

451,642 new cars - 0.5% more than expected - were registered in the UK in March, leading the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders to review its 2008 estimate upwards from the current 2.345 million units.

March is by far the most significant month in the first quarter of any year; the number plate change means that far more cars are bought in March than in January and February combined. None of this alters the fact that the Focus (which EurotaxGlass's reckons will be worth up to £500 more in resale values than the previous version) remains the most popular car in the UK, but it does show other intriguing trends, such as the ever-increasing appeal of superminis.

The Vauxhall Corsa and Peugeot 207 did particularly well last month. The Fiesta, in fact, came within 1500 units of pushing the Focus off the top slot for March, and it has now overtaken the Vauxhall Astra as the UK's number two car for 2008 so far.

Diesel cars were also more popular than in March last year, accounting for 40.4% of the market during the month and 41.9% over the first quarter. The UK's best-selling diesel at the moment is the VW Golf.

Alternative fuel vehicles are becoming more sought-after too. First-quarter results are 15.1% higher than in 2007, and the sector is led by the Toyota Prius.

The SMMT will publish its new estimate of year-long registrations later this month. In the meantime, it's warning that it still expects 2008 to be a "challenging" year. That caution is echoed by the RMI National Franchised Dealers Association. Director Sue Robinson points out that "many of the vehicles purchased in March would have been ordered in January and February, before the most recent economic pressures came to bear" and has called for the Bank of England to reduce interest rates "to give consumers breathing room".
