TOP GEAR PRESENTER JEREMY CLARKSON BOASTS ABOUT SPEEDING AT 186MPH

Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has boasted about driving at 186mph on public roads and getting away with it.

Notorious speeder Clarkson then advocated motorists altering their number plates by a couple of digits to avoid getting caught by speed cameras.

Clarkson, 48, was being interviewed by journalist Rosie Boycott for an audience at the Hay festival in Wales when he revealed he hadn’t been pulled over for speeding for at least 20 years.

When asked if his Top Gear fame had helped get him out of trouble with police he categorically denied it had made a difference and claimed he was actually 'quite a slow driver'.

Asked what was the fastest he had ever driven, he revealed: "On the public roads...186!" 

"Has a cop ever pulled you over?" Rosie asked. 

"Yes," he said, but added that he has a clean licence.

"I got pulled over the other day for not having insurance but that was just a technicality! I was in a brand new Audi R8 and a policeman pulled me over.

"He said they had checked the number plate and the car was not insured. I didn't even know they could tell that from number plates.

"It was a car I had been provided with for a test drive and it was all a mistake.

"But I haven't been pulled over for speed for 20 years and I have never been pulled over for speed while working on Top Gear. I don't drive very fast!" 

Asked what he would do if he was booked for speeding, he said: "I'd cry like a girl and hang on to his ankles!" 

He went on: "But these days you don't get stopped by the police because they are all filling in health and safety forms and inventing reasons why they can't go and catch a burglar!

"Now the Government is going to pass this new car tax structure and system of crime and punishment and base it all on the number plates of cars. If everybody just switched the number plate by a couple of digits....!" 

He was asked by one audience member: "When you teach your children to drive will you make them stick to the speed limits?"

He replied: "The speed limit is annoying because it holds up people who have got a job to do!"

He went on to say that his two oldest children can already drive and looking down at his family in the audience, he asked: "How old were you when you learnt to drive?" His son replied: "Seven."

Clarkson went on: "The sooner you can get them into a paddock to drive around the sooner you can knock out of them the idea that they have limitless powers. Then when they go on the road they won't drive straight into a tree, which is very important!"
