LAMBORGHINI BUYERS RACE TO BEAT TAX

EIGHT Lamborghinis worth $4.5 million are being flown to Australia to beat the rise in luxury car tax as top-end showrooms report a late rush of buyers desperate to register their orders before June 30.

Ferrari, Bentley, Maserati and Aston Martin expect June to be a record month as buyers take the plunge.

However, luxury dealers are nervous that sales will drop off in July, when the luxury car tax will add $17,000 to the price of an Aston Martin and $70,000 to a Rolls-Royce.

Bevan Clayton, of prestige specialist Trivett Classic, said his company was air-freighting two Rolls-Royce convertibles to Australia at a cost of $25,000 each.

"Those two were ready and we could get them here, so we did it," Mr Clayton said.

He expects to find buyers for eight Rolls-Royces between now and the end of June - more than have been sold so far this year, The Australian reports.

Andrew Smith of Lamborghini said the company was paying $15,000 per car to fly out four Gallardos and four Murcielagos. "Everybody wants their car flown out because the additional cost of flying is less than the extra tax," he said.

The luxury car tax increase could add $50,000 to the price of a Murcielago supercar, which starts at $675,678. Mr Smith said the brand was on track for a bumper June.

The general manager for Bentley and Aston Martin at Trivett Classic, Michael Darakis, said his showrooms were seeing a rush, with six Bentleys sold in a matter of days.

"May is going to be huge and June's going to be better - they'll both be records. People who've been contemplating a new car are now coming to market sooner."

Ferrari and Maserati importer Ateco Automotive said the stampede began the moment word of the tax leaked out.

"We were into double figures of registrations for Ferraris and Maseratis on the Monday before the budget, because people didn't know whether the luxury tax was going to come in immediately," spokesman Edward Rowe said.
