UNUSUAL CAREG NUMBER PLATES - NICE 1

AGE is just  "number plates" – for Don Hampson.

The former car dealer, of Gillroyd Lane, Linthwaite, will soon literally be showing signs of his age when he takes to the road in his Toyota Corolla, registration DON 82.

Mr Hampson, whose 82nd birthday is on July 6, bought the plate in 1972.

He said: “I was leaving work and I saw a Ford Zephyr with the number plate. It was sheer coincidence.

“I asked one or two blokes in the motor trade about it and they came up with a name for the guy who owned it.

“He ran a scrapyard, so I tracked him down and found out the car had been scrapped.

“He still had the plate and the registration book.

“I asked him if I could have it and I would give him £15.

“I paid him half at the time and intended to pay the other half when the registration was transferred by the DVLA.

“Unfortunately he died a short time later, so I still owe £7 10s.”

Mr Hampson, who worked for White and Lockwood Toyota dealers at Bradford Road, Fartown, initially fixed it to his Volkswagen Beetle.

Four years earlier he had paid £30 for a car just so he could get hold of the registration plate number DON 80 after putting an advert in a magazine.

He said: “Personalised number plates weren’t such a big deal at the time. I suppose I just bought one to enhance my own reputation.

“If you think about it, the chances of me seeing two number plates with my name on are very small.”

He has been using the DON 80 plate on his car up to now.

But he plans to swap cars with his wife Sylvia, who has been running a car with the 82 plate, after his birthday.

The plates would now be worth thousands of pounds if sold at auction – more than the value of the cars themselves.

But Mr Hampson said he was not interested in selling.

“I have no plans to get rid of them at the moment,” he said.
