INCREASE IN NUMBER PLATE THEFTS The soaring price of petrol has sparked a rise in the theft of car number plates and drive-off thefts from filling stations. Police in Leicester city centre say they have a higher than usual number of theft reports in recent weeks. Stolen plates have been fitted to thieves' cars and used in drive-off thefts - known as "bilking". When officers follow up the petrol station's complaint and compare the car on the forecourt CCTV they have found the number is for a different car. The problem of number plate theft is relatively small, but is growing, officers said. Officers have not revealed exact figures, but do not believe the stolen plates are being used to mask cars used in more serious crimes. Some thieves have used the plates to steal petrol from stations as far afield as Coventry in the West Midlands. Sergeant Adrian Underwood, of the city centre beat team, said rising petrol prices and a recent tightening of rules on the sale of replica plates could be contributing to the thefts. He said: "We'll get to a report of a theft from a car, and it's only the number plate that's gone. We'll check the car and the records will say it's a Ford Fiesta, but the car at the petrol station was a BMW. "It's reasonable to assume it has at least something to do with the recent increases in the price of petrol." Police recommend motorists replace the screws holding the plates in place with 'clutch-head' screws. The one-way screws make it impossible to remove plates without them breaking. They are planning operations to catch thieves and raise awareness of the crime. Lee Nicholls, owner of St Matthews Service Station, in Humberstone Road, Leicester, said his staff would not turn on the pumps for any motorists who appeared suspicious or evasive. He said: "We have people driving off without paying a couple of times a month." Details of stolen plates are passed to the force's automatic number plate recognition team. The team's cameras can read plates on moving cars in a split second and cross reference them with a national databases. A spokesman for the national Petrol Retailers Association said: "There are 400 filling stations going out of business in the UK every month in the UK. "The margins on petrol sales are as low as a penny a litre and some places are selling at a loss. "That's why petrol stations are selling other things. But the theft of petrol can be the final straw for some."
