LICENCE PLATE THEFTS LINKED TO DRIVE-OFFS Drive-off criminals have targeted petrol stations using licence plates stolen from cars in Chorley, police have said. Police say that six plates were stolen in the borough in the past two weeks and they have asked the public for assistance in keeping the criminals at bay. Officers are urging drivers to use protective screws and special shattering number plates to combat the thefts. The thieves struck cars parked on Stratford Road and Library Street in Chorley town centre and Chestnut Avenue in Euxton. More plates were unscrewed from vehicles parked on Bolton Road in Abbey Village, Bearswood Croft in Clayton-le-Woods and from the car park at the Original Farmers Arms in Eccleston. At least one of the plates stolen in Chorley was used to cover up a drive off from a petrol station in Burnley, which officers believe is linked to soaring petrol prices. Sgt Kevin Mountain, of Chorley police, said: "We would urge people to buy special sets of screws and shattering number plates that are made worthless if someone tries to unscrew them. "The theft of number plates could also lead to speeding tickets being issued in your name and cause quite a lot of hassle for the owner of the car. "The thefts of petrol could be linked to the rising fuel prices and we it seems to be an unusually high number of license plate thefts in such a short space of time." Managers at Tesco petrol station on Foxhole Road recently took drastic action and closed one of their pumps after a motorist stole £52 worth of fuel from the busy filling station during rush hour. A spokesman for Tesco said: "It's puzzling why people would want to attempt this as it's almost impossible to get away with - given CCTV is in operation police can track a car down quickly and easily." One motorist, who was waiting to fill up when the thieves struck at around 3pm on Thursday, said: "I'm not condoning it but fuel prices are so high at the minute that you can almost understand it. "But what these people don't realise is that it is a double-edged sword. The more prices go up, the more people will steal and the more people steal, the more prices will go up. "It's the rest of us that end up suffering." In a similar incident, thieves cut though a lock and stole petrol from a large storage tank at Cocker's Farm, in Heath Charnock, between Saturday and Sunday. According to police, there were at least 118 petrol-related crimes in Lancashire last month as fuel prices hit record levels. Prices in Chorley have now soared to a high of 122.9 per litre for unleaded and 135.9 for diesel.
