TAX-DODGERS TOLD TO PAY UP OR LOSE CARS

UNTAXED vehicles have been driven off the road in a two-day crackdown in Fareham.

Car owners were faced with the prospect of paying £200 fines or losing their vehicles, as police, council and DVLA officials targeted hotspots across the borough.

The action, which came as a direct response from concerns raised by residents about antisocial use of unlicensed cars, has been hailed as such a success that further operations are already being planned.

Working in areas where information and complaints have been received about untaxed vehicles, officials found 30 cars without valid tax discs during the sting - all of them at least a month out of date.

The cars were clamped, and notices placed on them warning their owners they were breaking the law.

Motorists had to pay a £200 fine before the clamps were removed, £120 of which they will get back once they buy car tax.

Fareham Borough Council's executive member for public protection Councillor Arthur Mandry said he was delighted with the action, which he thinks will be popular with the borough's residents.

"This was a very worthwhile operation and I believe totally approved of by the general public as it removes unlicensed vehicles which are sometimes uninsured and without the necessary MOT certificate," he said.

Over the two days, eight cars were removed from the streets and impounded, while 19 owners paid the release charge to have the clamps removed.

Registered owners of vehicles that were taken away have been informed and given 14 days to respond or risk their car being scrapped.

Fareham District Commander, Chief Inspector Steve Wallace, said the operation shows the authorities have listened to the concerns of people in and around Fareham.

"We get regular community complaints about untaxed cars and the antisocial use of vehicles, and have responded as a community safety partnership,"

he said.

"Further operations are planned already following our success here."
