Changes introduced by the DVLA mean that motorists will have longer to tax their vehicle.

Changes to the way the DVLA operates should make life easier for motorists from this month.

According to the agency, many motorists taxing their vehicle online or by phone do not complete the transaction when they realise the new tax disc may not arrive in time for the 1st of the following month.

However, following changes to its customer services, the DVLA has now made it possible for motorists to legally drive their vehicles for up to five days while they wait for the new tax disc to arrive.

This will only be possible where the new tax disc is applied for before the current one expires and motorists must continue to display the expired disc in their vehicle until the new one arrives.

More changes to help car owners

Also, the DVLA is now allowing people to buy their tax disc from the 5th day of the month that their current disc is due to expire in. Previously, discs could only be bought from the 15th of the month.

The DVLA is also offering motorists the chance to be entered into a free prize draw to win a new car, when they use the electronic licensing service.

The DVLA's attempts to improve customer services follows an undercover Parker’s investigation, which revealed that they gave misleading and inaccurate road tax information to as many as three-in-four motorists.
