DRIVERS in north Kent can attend a safer plates initiative in order to combat number plate theft.

The day will take place on September 13 at 9am in the car park of Waitrose in Station Road, Longfield.

The nationwide issue, where plates are stolen from existing vehicles, allows criminals to clone other cars.

Police have discovered an effective way to deter thieves by the use of anti-tamper screws.

These are one way screws which once fitted cannot easily be removed.

They are then covered with a security cap as an added deterrent.

At the event drivers can collect the number plate screws free of charge.

It has been organised by Longfield Police Community Support Officer, Tony Quilter.

He said: "Victims of this type of crime might not be aware they have been duped until speeding, parking and congestion penalty charge tickets arrive on the doormat.

"Having these screws fitted is a simple measure to reduce the risk that your number plate will be targeted."
