When a farmer, Gordon William Stanley wanted to transfer his private number plate T2 GWS to a new vehicle following his Range Rover being destroyed by fire, he was shocked to find that the DVLA ordered him to hand them over.

Gordon, 59, said: "I bought the plates fair and square from the DVLA nine years ago for £350 and they have steadily increased in value over the years.

"I thought they were mine, but the DVLA didn't see it that way."

The number plates were on his Range Rover which was left in a lay-by overnight following a puncture, when he returned the following morning the Range Rover was a burnt out wreck, not the sort of thing that you would expect to find.

He recalled: "I rang the DVLA about switching the plates and they said 'no problem' but asked for a letter from my insurance company confirming they had no interest in the plates.

"I got my insurance broker to write, but the DVLA said that was not good enough.

"It was another couple of weeks before the actual company wrote and by that time the vehicle had been scrapped."

The problem here is that he should have transferred the number plates before the vehicle was scrapped, otherwise in true DVLA form the number plates go with the vehicle.

A spokesperson said they would take a second look at Gordon's case, adding: "We have asked our Cherished Transfer Team to investigate."

Gordon said: "They now seem to agree it is a crazy situation and say it is likely I will be allowed to keep the plates."

Good for the DVLA, a common sense decision that means there are real people working in the DVLA offices after all.
