6B IS THE MAGIC NUMBER AS PLATE GOES FOR £130,000

VEHICLE licensing bosses had a windfall served up on a plate when they sold a rare registration for £130,000.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) began a three-day auction of personalised registrations at the Haycock Hotel, in Wansford, near Peterborough, yesterday, with 1,500 plates to go under the hammer during the event.



And business got off to a flying start when a plate given a reserve value of £8,000 went for 13 times that amount after bidding rocketed to £102,200.

With VAT, administration charges and commission added, the final bill for the plate which carries just two characters – 6B – totted up to a whopping £129,171.

DVLA's marketing manager for personalised registrations Damian Lawson said the plate had been snapped up by a determined, but anonymous, internet bidder, who was locked in combat with just one other potential buyer from around the £70,000 point after the rest of the field had melted away.

He said: "It's the most we've got from one plate for a couple of years. The highest was £254,000 for 51 NGH, which looks like Singh.

"As a rule of thumb, the fewer letters and numbers they have, the more expensive they are. A single number and a single letter is the shortest plate you can have, and will always attract a great deal of interest from the wealthy.

"6B looks a little bit like GB for Great Britain, so maybe that's the reason why it commanded such a big price."

The DVLA holds six auctions of personalised number plates around the country annually, making £84 million from them last year.

The registrations are not specially composed to spell out words, but are genuine unissued ones, some of which date back to the '20s and '30s.

Mr Lawson said another plate expected to do well is THE 571G, which resembles the name of the enigmatic driver from Top Gear, The Stig.

He added: "You never know how much they will go for."
