GERRY'S MAGIC NUMBER PLATE

Tyrone fans, and hopefully quite a few neutrals, are celebrating this week following the victory on Sunday of the Tyrone senior footballers in the All-Ireland Football Championship final in Croke Park.

In the run up to the final, and indeed after the win, many Tyrone fans cars and vehicles have been decorated with flags, bunting and - in some extreme cases - painted their vehicles in the county colours of red and white.

But, one Enniskillen businessman, and former Tyrone native, has found another way of marking this great sporting achievement.

Enniskillen businessman, Gerry Murphy, owner of Care Cabs in Head Street, has immortalised the Tyrone success by purchasing a unique registration plate. Gerry bought the plate 'TY05 ONE' this week from Alan Evans of Western Registrations.

Gerry, who originally comes from Trillick, and who played football for Trillick but now lives in Enniskillen, explains that the number not only looks like the word 'Tyrone' but with '05' it celebrates the year Tyrone first beat Kerry in an All-Ireland final.

Asked what car, or taxi, was he going to put the new number on, Gerry explained that after picking up the new registration plates yesterday (Tuesday), he and his wife were going to look for a new car to put it on - 'possibly a white or red Mercedes'.

Gerry wouldn't be drawn on how much he paid for the special number plate, but it said it was quite a lot of money. He has been a life-long Tyrone supporter and was in Croke Park on Sunday to see Tyrone captain Brian Dooher lift Sam Maguire for the second time - the county's third All-Ireland in five years.

Gerry bought the number of Alan Evans of Western Registrations who also sold a similar number 'TYO3 ONE' to a man from Dromore in County Tyrone following the county's first All-Ireland success.

For anyone else who would like a special registration plate to mark the success of Tyrone, Alan says he also has 'TY06 ONE' and 'TYO7 ONE' for sale, while 'TYO2 ONE' is (at time of going to press) still available. Alan got the plates made up yesterday (Tuesday) and he presented them to Gerry - even going so far as to don a WJ Dolan jersey like the one Tyrone wore when Peter Canavan lifted Sam Maguire back in 2003.
