Illegal number plates are fast becoming one of the sure ways of being pulled over by the police these days. This comes as new figures from a report produced by the Department of Transport and the fifty two police forces across the UK highlighting rogue drivers.

This comes as new figures from a report produced by the Department of Transport and the fifty two police forces across the UK highlighting rogue drivers.The police, DVLA and other agencies have been literally clamping down on the hardcore rogue element of drivers who are constantly breaking the law of roads.With 34million vehicles and 43 million drivers using UK roads, the report showed that:1.2 per cent of drivers stopped, or more than half a million (516,000) were uninsured.2.2 per cent of vehicles stopped - or nearly three quarters of a million ( 748,000) - had illegal registration plates using unlawful fonts or incorrect spacing.1.5 per cent of cars stopped cars, equivalent to more than half a million (510,000) vehicles, did not have a MOT certificate of roadworthiness.1 per cent of vehicles - 340,000 - were evading road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty).And 0.8 per cent of drivers - 344,000 - did not have a valid licence.Older vehicles - over 10 years old - were 'significantly less likely to have accurate vehicle records or be correctly registered. They were less likely to be insured, more likely to be untaxed. It was also less likely for the driver to be licensed and the driver record to be correct.Male drivers were also 'significantly less likely to be licensed or insured, as were those aged 25 to 35.These are just the highlights of what sort of offences are taking place throughout the UK road network, but more importantly are potentially dangerous to other users of the roads.Jim Fitzpatrick, Road Safety Minister, said: 'Unlicensed and uninsured drivers are a menace on our roads.'They add £30 a year to every motorist's insurance premium and it is estimated that uninsured and untraced drivers kill 160 people and injure 23,000 every year. We know we need to do more.'This evidence proves that there are some serious problems that really do need to be addressed to ensure the safety of other drivers.Richard Brunstrom, Chief Constable of North Wales Police, said: 'While there has been a significant improvement in compliance since the previous operation in 2006, we should not be complacent.'The use of technology has vastly improved the detection rate of those vehicles with no tax, MOT or insurance.Source [Daily Mail]
