MOTORISTS ALLOWED TO PUT NATIONAL FLAGS ON NUMBER PLATES

Motorists will be able to display national flags on their number plates after the Government solved a seven-year problem by removing Northern Ireland from the legislation.

It was decided in 2001 that only the European Union symbol of 12 yellow stars on a blue background would be allowed.

But the new arrangements will allow motorists to replace the ring of stars with either the Union Flag, Cross of St George, Scottish saltire or Welsh dragon.

Beneath that they will be allowed to display Eng for England, Sco for Scotland, Wal for Wales or GB for Great Britain.

This was forced through despite opposition to the move by a coalition of Conservative, Liberal Democrat and nationalist MPs.

In June 2001 the Government pledged to alter the regulations to allow the flags to be displayed, but resolving the thorny issue of Northern Ireland has prevented this from being done.

Now Geoff Hoon, the new Transport Secretary, has decided to press ahead without Northern Ireland and change the law governing number plates.

The new arrangements will mean that thousands of motorists will no longer face a £60 fine if they display a flag on their number plate.

Northern Ireland will also be included when a symbol can be agreed by both sides of the sectarian divide.

But the decision to exclude Northern Ireland from the arrangements was condemned by Jeffrey Donaldson, the Democratic Unionist party MP for Lagan Valley,

"I think it is most unfortunate that Northern Ireland should be excluded from this scheme," he said.

"We have managed to find symbols in the Assembly and Police Service which have satisfied all sides of the community.

"I think the Government has taken the lazy way out."
