Number plate or Registation warning from DVLA

MOTORISTS have been warned to be on their guard against rogue number plate suppliers.The warning comes from Hertfordshire Constabulary, which is planning an operation with the DVLA to clamp down on illegal number plates in the county.

The operation will involve road safety checks of vehicles, paying particular attention to the lawfulness of number plates.There are currently about 32 million licensed vehicles in Great Britain, with an estimated 65,000 registered in Hertfordshire.The trend in personalised registration marks has been growing steadily for a number of years and while most  registration marks and index plates are displayed correctly and in accordance with the applicable legislation, there is a growth in the use of illegally represented index plates and registration marks.Current legislation covering index plates relates to both the suppliers of plates and those who purchase and use them. The legislation requires the index plate to be manufactured and presented in particular way, and specifies the size, spacing, font and colours of characters.Rogue number plate suppliers - many of whom are known to operate in the Hertfordshire area - can, and sometimes do, falsify number plates for criminal use.Honest, law-abiding motorists are increasingly being bothered as a consequence of offences committed by people displaying their registration marks on other vehicles. These plates do not necessarily have to be stolen from vehicles but can be obtained illegally from rogue suppliers.Before selling a number plate, the supplier is required by law to seek proof the customer is entitled to the registration mark, normally through seeing the registration certificate, as well as requesting proof of identity. A record must also be kept of the documents presented.Inspector Nigel Eastaugh said: "It appears that the growing trend to alter registration marks issued by DVLA is unique to the UK."Although a vast majority of vehicle owners who have bought and display personalised plates do it legally, there is a growing number who deliberately misrepresent their index plate characters to spell names or words."This is often done with strategically placed bolts or by using paint, marker pen or tape, or by purchasing plates from unregistered suppliers who illegally provide plates with incorrect character size, fonts and spacing."Vehicle owners need to be aware that if their vehicle registration mark has been misrepresented deliberately, DVLA will consider revocation of the registration mark."Motorists can be fined up to £1,000 for displaying an illegal number plate and a number plate supplier could be fined up to £5,000 for carrying on business while unregistered.Members of the public should always buy their number plates from bone-fide suppliers. DVLA maintains a register of number plate suppliers and the register is available to view on the internet at www.gov.uk/motoring.
