WHERE TO GET THE BEST DISCOUNTS ON A NEW CARS

It sounds brutal, I know. But the cruel reality is that you need to hound the most desperate manufacturers of 2008 if you crave cut-throat discounts on unused cars. So which makers are in a state of deep distress? The firms which have endured the largest sales slumps so far in 2008, that’s who.

Look at the big picture for new car sales/registrations during the first 11 months of this year versus the same period last and it’s clear that 10 companies (four American, the others from Britain, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Sweden) aren’t just down, they are severely depressed. And, as mercenary as this may sound, these are the firms that bargain-hunting consumers should target and haggle hard with. They have countless ‘orphan’ cars that have no homes to go to. If you’re cash rich you can, within reason, name the price you want to pay for that fresh-from-the-factory model you’ve always fancied.

And why not? After all, there’s little point in depositing your personal wealth with a bank or building society paying pathetic rates of interest, is there?

So who are the exploitable, worst of the worst manufacturers in terms of falling sales so far in 2008? In the interests of consumer awareness, it’s my duty to name names.

General Motors's stand-alone Corvette ‘range’ (it’s not part of the Chevrolet line-up in the UK) is suffering more than any other during the first 11 months of ’08, thanks to a 76 per cent dive. Sales are down to one car per month on average, although - astonishingly - none were sold in November. Scarily, Corvette officially has 0.00 per cent share of the British market. Owner GM insists Corvette hasn’t pulled out of the UK so it simply has to tear up its official price lists and start again…or die.

SsangYong of South Korea has also seen its sales slump by more than half. It’s a similar story for Corvette’s stablemate, Cadillac, which last month sold cars at a demoralising rate of just one a week. Price-slashing is now obligatory.

Proton sales are down almost 40 per cent so far this year and I’m not surprised in view of the fact that this bland range of cars from Malaysia has an identity crisis and its list prices just aren’t attractive enough. They must be discounted…or ignored.

Armed with fine models such as the 300C, as well as the versatile Voyager (with its clever 'stow and go' seats that must be seen to be believed) I’m astonished that Chrysler is so high up my Sales Slump List, 2008.

To rub salt into Chrysler’s wounds, sister company Jeep has plummeted by a similar figure (35 per cent). Yet its all-new, reasonably priced Cherokee was launched this year and is highly credible. Better still, the Patriot (the spiritual successor to the original, much-loved, slab-sided Cherokee) is one of the bargains of 2008, even if you have to pay full price. With a grand or three off, it’s irrisistable - but only in 42mpg diesel guise.

Saab is hurting almost as badly and is currently selling hundreds of cars per month, instead of the thousands it traditionally shifts. Dealer compounds need unblocking. Colossal discounts are therefore available.

Proving that the Toyota empire is not as flawless as some would have you believe, the Japanese giant’s Lexus division has the dubious honour of being THE mainstream prestige brand that’s suffering more than any other in 2008. I can’t help thinking that Lexus has been rumbled as the public wakes up to the company’s high list prices and ‘environmentally friendly’ hybrid technology that forces some models to return less than 30mpg in real-world conditions. Be cautious if you’re offered a Lexus with a colossal discount. An £88,000 LS 600h with £10,000 off is still overpriced.

Porsche sales have gone south by almost a third this year. Therefore the manufacturer of some of the best sports cars the world has to offer has countless thousands of unsold cars looking for buyers. If you can’t get a sizeable discount on a 911 now, you never will.

With sales down 29 per cent year on year, Land Rover is another company that’s reeling and therefore obliged to move unsold stock - inevitably with thousands off. Don’t feel too sorry for the Solihull-based manufacturer though, because it has shifted 31,000 cars this year - and that’s more than Corvette, SsangYong, Cadillac, Proton, Chrysler, Jeep, Lexus and Porsche combined.

* A BMW salesman has been on the phone, intimating that I lied when I recently revealed that discounts of almost £9,000 are achievable on an unused BMW X3.

Why would I invent such a price cut? Fact is, I haven’t. And I wouldn’t. There's no need to when Motorpoint has been marketing the X3 3.0D SE unused/pre-registered (ie delivery mileage only) for under £25,000 - almost £9,000 less than the £33,000-plus official asking price. Don’t blame/thank/shoot me. I’m only the money-saving messenger.

And if I’m allowed, I’ll continue telling Telegraph readers where and how how they can save thousands on their car and motoring-related costs throughout 2009.
