POLICE HAND OUT TAMPER-PROOF SCREWS FOR NUMBER PLATES

POLICE launched a blitz on car crime and today declared: “The number’s up for reg plate thieves”.

Crooks are stealing number plates to disguise the identity of vehicles which they are using to commit further crimes such as petrol theft, burglaries and drugs offences.

Now the Safer Birmingham Partnership and West Midlands Police have joined forces to tackle the growing menace. And they are offering drivers a tamper-proof solution to beating the crooks who use stolen registration plates to commit crime.

Police officers will be distributing special tamper-proof screw packs along with other crime prevention information to drivers living in areas police number-crunchers have identified as hotspots for crime.

Supt Tim Godwin, who is leading the initiative, said: “The theft of number plates is a real issue.

“It is basically stealing your identity and could lead police to your door if your stolen number plates are used in a crime.

“The types of crime they are used for include theft of petrol, robberies and other very serious offences. We’d like to encourage motorists in Birmingham to take note of the simple advice we are providing and work with us to make Birmingham an even safer city.”

During the summer as petrol prices climbed to record highs, police recorded a surge in the theft of car registration plates. These were then used to disguise another car’s real identity by thieves filling up on forecourts and driving off without paying.

Cloned number plates have also been used by dodgy drivers to beat the London congestion charges.

This activity is part of a wider campaign to tackle vehicle crime which includes undercover operations targeting vehicle criminals in hotspot areas and the use of decoy cars equipped with the latest tracking and covert CCTV technology.
