PRINCESS BEA'S BMW STOLEN WITH PERSONALISED NUMBER PLATES

Princess Beatrice had her BMW stolen with her personalised number plates after she allegedly left the keys in the ignition on a shopping trip.

The daughter of the Duke of York was accompanied into a shop in South Kensington with her police protection officer. When she came out the car, a 17th birthday present from her father, had disappeared.

An opportunistic thief, is thought to have spotted the keys in the ignition, simply opened the door, started-up the engine and driven off in broad daylight on Wednesday. The car, with its own personalised number plates, is now being searched for by the police.

Questions are now being asked about the role of the police protection officer who allegedly failed to ensure that the car had been made secure before they went into the shop.

A number of personal possessions of the princess, who is fifth in line to the throne, were in the car. Buckingham Palace said that none of the items were of a sensitive nature.

Princess Beatrice, 20, is on holiday from Goldsmiths, which is part of the University of London, where she is studying History of Art. She left school in 2007 with three A-levels, an A and two Bs, which eclipsed Prince William who had the previous best academic record for a member of the Royal Family with an A, B and C.

After realising the car had been stolen the protection officer radioed for backup. A marked patrol car arrived at the scene and was followed by another car bringing Princess Eugenie, 18, her sister. the two princesses went to a nearby pub.

There has been criticism of the costs of the estimated £250,000 annual bill for the round the clock security coverage for the two princesses. Zara Phillips, the daughter of the Princess Royal who has a far higher profile, has no police protection nor does her brother Peter.

Last week Princess Beatrice's Norfolk Terrier Max, who went missing three weeks ago, returned to the family home in Windsor Great Park. The Queen had joined in the search for the dog who is thought to have disappeared into a rabbit hole on the 5,000 acre estate.
