POLICE TURN THE SCREW TO COMBAT LICENCE PLATE THEFT

Police are to turn the screw in the battle against vehicle fraud by bringing back a popular number plate securing scheme next week.


The Shipley Neighbourhood Police Team (NPT) are to offer to secure vehicle number plates free of charge this coming Sunday to help protect drivers against vehicle related fraud and crime.

Officers from the NPT will be based in St Peters Church car park, Moorhead Lane Shipley, between 1pm and 5pm to carry out the work which is part of an ongoing initiative.

The upgrade will be available to anyone who has a number plate secured by metal screws, which officers will replace with specially designed ones which are much harder to remove.

It will not be available, however, to anyone whose car number plates are either stuck on by glue or secured with plastic screws.

Registration plates which are stolen from cars can often be fitted to vehicles used in crime by thieves, making them much harder to track and helping to disguise the identity of the driver.

PC Steve Tudge of the Shipley Neighbourhood Police Team said the initiative was being launched to protect drivers from potentially becoming victims of fraud.

He said: “We are aware there have been reports of theft of number plates in the Saltaire, Moorhead and Nab Wood areas of Shipley and while it is not an excessive problem it is one we are keen to tackle.
“Stolen plates can be used to disguise the real identity of vehicles used in crime making it difficult to identify those responsible, so it is important we do all we can to prevent number late theft.”

The number plate initiative will take place at St Peters Church Car Park on Moorhead Lane, Shipley on Sunday January 25 between 1pm and 5pm.
