RARE REG NUMBER PLATE EXPECTED TO FETCH £500,000

FANCY yourself as a bit of royalty and have £500,000 to spare?  Well, a number plate of the highest order could be just for you.

The registration 1 HRH is one of 1,600 going under the hammer at a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency auction this week.

It’s expected to fetch more than the £400,000 paid for 4 HRH last year and could reach half a million if predictions come true.

DVLA officials in Swansea involved in the sale reckon the unique plate of just two numbers 1 0 – the first of its kind to be issued – could sell for even more.

It’s got a reserve price of a mere £10,000, along with the plate 3 S (reserve of £8,000) and 1 HRH (reserve of £3,200).

Damien Lawson, head of marketing at DVLA Personalised Registrations, explained: “It’s the first auction of the year and as always we’ve had a lot of interest from all over the world.

“Two number plates have attracted the biggest amount of attention, they are 1 HRH and 1 0, and we are confident they will both attract six-figure sums. Especially 1 0, because it’s the first of its kind to be released for sale.

“Number plates beginning with zero were issued between 1903 and 1913 but this is the first one beginning with a one.”

After 4 HRH went for a whopping £400,000 to an unknown bidder at a private auction last year, Damien Lawson said the demand for ‘royal’ plates remains high.

He added: “Obviously, someone with those initials could want it but the royal connotations are probably the biggest draw.

“The registration 4 HRH went for £400,000 last year so could 1 HRH go for more? Who knows.

“Obviously our royal family doesn’t buy up personalised plates but foreign royalty like to have such things on their cars in Britain.”

Despite the current financial crises the DVLA expects to rake in around £3.5m from this one auction alone and the personalised registration business is worth around £85m to the organisation annually.

“Interest in personalised plates at the less valuable end of the scale has dropped slightly but people who can afford to spend six-figures sums on a number plate are not really affected by the recession,” insisted Damian Lawson.

Last year the DVLA sold the number plate 51 NGH for £254,000 and 1 RH to Surrey-based retired businessman Rob Harverson for £247,000.

Potential owners of the personalised plated, which start at around £300, have to register with the DVLA before they can bid.

The three-day auction starts this Wednesday at Whittlebury Hall, in Northamptonshire.

“People follow the auction online and over the phone to bid,” said Damien Lawson.

“Everyone can buy them. Of course some get them for vanity reasons but that’s certainly not the only reason. Businesses buy them up for the fleet of vehicles and it advertises the company.

“People buy them as an investment because they think the value will go up and some hope to sell them on.

“They’re also bought as heirlooms for children as young as one or two to have when they pass their test.”
