SMA BUYS LEEDS AUCTION HOUSE SCOTTISH Motor Auctions yesterday revealed it had snapped up an auction house in Leeds, "significantly" expanding its business operations in England. Kinross-based Scottish Motor Auctions (SMA), which claims to be the UK's oldest and now largest independently-owned motor auction group in the UK, acquired Premier Motor Auctions (PMA) after it went into administration in December. The group said the Leeds operation hosts five auctions a week, bringing the number of group auctions to 22 a week. SMA also has sites in Livingston, Aberdeen, Kinross, and Newcastle. SMA itself was bought out in 2007 by car finance specialists Bob Anderson and Kevin Bann, whose aim is to become the leading UK motor auction group. SMA, which also operates commercial and plant auctions, says it expects to sell 130,000 vehicles this year. Managing director Bob Anderson said: "We are delighted to have made the acquisition in Leeds, which increases the profile of the SMA brand." In its 2007 accounts, PMA made a £1.7 million profit on sales of £179.5m. During the same year, SMA had a turnover of £7.3m – which represents commissions on sales – and an operating profit of £708,758. The Leeds business – now known as SMA Leeds – is authorised by the DVLA to sell personalised number plates. In January, a customer paid £170,000 for the license plate 1 0.
