DOCTORED NUMBER PLATES WARNING

Tens of thousands of motorists are set to fail their MoT test as a result of new curbs on doctored number plates.

Changes to the MoT test, which come into force within weeks, are aimed at catching drivers who try to dodge speed cameras by using reflective paint or alter the plate's background to make it impossible for the camera to read them.

The Department for Transport estimates that there are currently 40,000 motorists on the road who would be caught by the new rule.

A DfT spokesman said: "The MOT test already includes a basic check of registration-plates – primarily to ensure that characters are properly formed and recognisable, and also to ensure that the plates are complete and not in danger of falling off the vehicle.

"The main purpose of this modification to the MOT test is to detect registration-plates which have an illegal background that can prevent identification of the plate by traffic enforcement cameras."

Other forms of tampering with number plates are already illegal, such as using a bolt or masking tape to change the appearance of a letter.

A survey on 1,000 motorists by one insurance company found that more than one in 10 motorists had either tampered with their number plates or would consider doing so.

The move was welcomed by Rob Gifford, executive director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety: "It is illegal and it is right for the Government to tighten up the law to ensure that these areas are tightened up in the interests of safety."
