For the agency is clearly on a magnificent roll with staggering prices regularly being handed over, indeed its last four auctions have witnessed nearly £1.3 million spent on seven registrations alone.

Friday’s climax at Ardencote Manor, Warwickshire, saw the 2 O registration – the second instalment of the agency’s single digit O-series sell off of 2009 – fall under the hammer for £142,249. 1 O was sold in January for £210,242 while 3 O will “star” at Wychwood Park near Crewe, Cheshire, in June.

The princely sum, however, was overshadowed by the record breaking £352,411 – the highest price paid at a DVLA auction - for 1 D. In total, the sale raised £3.6 million.

Damian Lawson, DVLA Personalised Registrations’ Marketing Manager, said: “While we anticipated an interest in the O-series when we announced their sale, we never expected the kind of sums paid for 1 O and now 2 O. The next auction where 3 O will be sold cannot come soon enough.”

He added: “Last week’s auction got off to an incredible start with 1 D surpassing our previous record – 51 NGH set in 2006 – by more than £98,000. The underlying message from those buying our plates is that they’re making the purchases as investments.”
