AVFC CAR NUMBER PLATE UP FOR SALE

FOOTIE-mad Steve Smith is being forced to sell his prized Aston Villa number plate to keep his recession-hit business going.

The 51-year old, from Yardley, who runs Saltley-based transport business List waited five years to get his hands on FI VFC which looks like AVFC on the plate.

But with trade on the downturn the Villa season ticket holder said he will now have to sell it and plough the money back into the business.

Mr Smith is hoping the plate which also features the Villa emblem will fetch a minimum of £80,000 and has agreed to give 25 per cent of the sale to the Birmingham Mail Charity Trust.

He said: “It’s worth quite a bit of money. I have only had it since September and I waited for five years for the F1 prefix to come out. Unfortunately, now with the current economic climate I can’t afford to keep it.

“I have decided to sell it so the money can go towards the business, but I thought I could also do something for charity. I read an article in the Mail about helping the charity trust.”

Mr Smith bought the plate from the DVLA after waiting for the F1 prefix to be released. He then ­transferred it on to his Dodge Nitro.

He added: “I am so proud of the plate, with the F and the I close together it is the best Villa plate I have seen apart from the plates that Doug Ellis has – AV1 and the one John Gregory bought in 2000 V1LLA. I would love it if someone involved in the club bought my plate, maybe one of the players or coaching staff.”

Mr Smith has had to reduce the number of trucks he operates and has cut staff back to two people.
