DVLA ‘RUINING’ LIMO FIRM IN NUMBER PLATE DISPUTE

THE owner of an alternative limousine claims he is being victimised by the DVLA.

Alexis Leventis, of Marmion Road, Henley, has been hiring out his “stretch” Volkswagen Beetle for weddings and other occasions.

Now the DLVA has told him he must stop doing business until he has the correct licence plate.

Mr Leventis, 43, estimates he is losing about £800 a month as a result — just as his custom was growing.

It comes after one of his premises was burnt down and he had to have a major operation.

Extended vehicles, kit cars and those not originally licensed in Britain must obtain a Q registration from the agency.

Mr Leventis said: “I had four weddings booked but have now had to send their money back. I received a call from the DVLA and then received a form telling me that I needed to get a Q plate. They also sent someone to inspect the vehicle.

“As far as they are concerned, any vehicle that has been cut should be on a Q plate — but it is not necessary.

“The idea of a Q plate is to tell the public that it is a kit car. My car is not made up of different cars, it has just been stretched. Everything about it is Beetle — gearbox, doors, right down to its seats.”

Mr Leventis founded Henley Beetles, which restores, customises and services the VW models, in 1987. He claims he is being targeted as part of a clampdown by the Government on limousines imported from America.

Road safety experts believe the imports are dangerous because they are so long and could lead to multiple casualties if they were involved in a crash as they can hold a lot of people and their sides are vulnerable.

Mr Leventis said: “I understand the safety issue but my car still holds only four people. I built it to be more comfortable. I have had 6ft 6in grooms in the back quite comfortably. “

He spent a year extending his GT Beetle by 40 inches before taking it on the road for the first time three years ago. He said it “sailed through” its MOT test.

“I now look at every altered vehicle which has not got a Q plate and it winds me up,” said Mr Leventis. “I phoned another company which has three of the same cars and they had never heard from the DVLA. Why do I have to have a Q plate when others don’t? The DVLA is victimising me. ”

Four years ago, his Henley workshop was burnt down after an arson attack on a neighbouring shop. Then two years ago, he had to have a lump removed from the left side of his head.

Mr Leventis, who has a four-year-old son, Alexei, said: “It was pushing on the nerve that sends signals to my ear. It made me very dizzy. I had it removed and I can no longer hear out of my left ear.”

His wife Melanie said: “This really is a kick after all the years he had been doing the car up, particularly after his illness. He doesn’t have a lot of luck.”

A DVLA Spokesperson said:

"DVLA advises that where a personal registration number has been assigned to a vehicle the keeper should ensure that the number is retained before carrying out any modifications which could affect its identity. If this is not done the number could be lost."
