MOTORISTS WARNED AGAINST HIDING THEIR NUMBER PLATES

Road safety campaigners have warned motorists not to try to hide their number plates from speed cameras with sprays and other products available on the internet.

Sussex Safer Roads Partnership's Neil Hopkins said: “We have tested some of these products and have found that none of them have a detrimental effect on the image taken by a safety camera.

“In fact, some of them even appear to enhance the lettering on number plates, making them even clearer to read and helping Sussex Police to identify the vehicle.

“I find it disturbing that a minority of motorists are willing not only to put themselves and others in danger through intentional misuse of speed, but also to break the law in their efforts not to be detected exceeding the speed limit.”

Superintendent Steve Barry, of Sussex Police’s roads policing unit, said: “Obscuring a number plate is an offence under the Vehicle Excise and Regulation Act 1994 and is punishable on summary conviction with a fine.

“Sussex Police officers are always vigilant for those motorists who try and avoid detection by obscuring their number plate or attempt to make it unreadable.

“It is particularly concerning that the individuals putting their faith in these products, or any other means of obscuring a number plate, evidently believe that the rules of the road do not apply to them. Speed limits are just that, limits, not targets, and the only way to beat the camera is not to exceed the limit in the first place.”
