DVLA PUBLISH FIGURES REVEALING THEY MADE £571M FROM PERSONALISED NUMBER PLATES

MOTORISTS have spent an astonishing £571m in just seven years on personalised number plates.

The Swansea-based DVLA, which has released sales figures for its personalised registrations from 2002, now rakes in around £250,000 every day from drivers keen to stand out from the crowd.

Personalised plates can be bought for a minimum of £250.

But the most sought-after ones costs thousands.

Among the most expensive has been 51NGH which went for £254,000 in 2006.

One driver paid £51,500 for 1RAN and another, a Welsh businessman living in Oxford, last year shelled out £27,200 at an auction for WEL5H.

The Welsh businessman paid a grand total of £34,400 by the time VAT and other fees had ben added on but afterwards he declared “it was worth it”.

The auction at the Celtic Manor in Newport at which that plate was bought featured around 1,500 special number plates with many bearing a Welsh connection.

They included BAN 9OR (Bangor), CLW 7D (Clwyd), NEA 7H (Neath), and C7 MRU (Cymru) which sold for a £5,000.

Previous Welsh-themed number plates that have gone under the hammer include TAFFY, which was sold for £5,000.

Damien Lawson, the DVLA’s marketing manager for personalised registrations said the plates were become extremely popular as gifts.

A survey by the DVLA found that between October last year and January this year, 46% of personalised number plates bought by the public were presents for loved ones.

And it was found Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day gifts accounted for 10% of sales.

Mr Lawson said: “Everyone can buy them. Of course some get them for vanity reasons but that’s certainly not the only reason. Businesses buy them up for the fleet of vehicles and it advertises the company.

“People buy them as an investment because they think the value will go up and some hope to sell them on.

“They’re also bought as heirlooms for children as young as one or two to have when they pass their test.”

Some plates only acquire significance because of particular owners.

For example, COM 1C was formerly owned by the comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, magician Paul Daniels had MAG 1C, the 1967 plate “BEL 12E” is owned by the Belize High Commission, and “1 AFG” is owned by the Afghan embassy.

The DVLA does not approve personalised registrations if they contain words which are offensive in any widely used language.

The DVLA however lately has released more and more previously banned combinations such as SEX and DAM.

In the UK, there are a large number of private dealers who act as agents selling DVLA registrations, as well as their own stock – often purchased at auction or from private sellers.

The most expensive personalised number plates sold on eBayMotors.co.uk last year included STUD which cost £14,947, ELV111S, setting its owner back £10,865 and Liverpool footballer Dirk Kuyt’s K11YTD with a price of £7,174.

After Michael Jackson’s death was announced this year, North Hertfordshire student Thomas Slater, 17, shelled out £370 for the number plate MJ09 KOP 9 – standing for Michael Jackson 2009, King of Pop.

By his own admission, he’s unlikely to be able to afford a car “for some time” having used his savings from his part-time job at Sainsbury’s to pay for the tribute.

But Mr Lawson said the purchase could be an investment.

He said: “I take my hat off to Thomas’s ingenuity. With more than 30 million registrations on our database, his clever use of available letters and numbers gifted him his personal tribute to Jackson.”
