BAR codes and computer chips could replace vehicle registrations in Victoria one day under a dramatic rethink of number plate designs.

The three-letter, three-digit number plates, introduced in 1977, have worked their way through to XXX-000 and are expected to revert to AAA-000 in the next 12 months, sparking calls for a new style of plate for the Garden State.

Austroads, the association of Australian and New Zealand traffic authorities, was reported to be investigating embedding identification chips in cars, and RACV public policy manager Brian Negus said while bar code number plates might be a long way into the future, Victoria could adopt innovative registration methods already available.

VicRoads confirmed the State Government had agreed to consider a unique plate format for Victoria and Opposition state development spokesman Richard Dalla-Riva called on Premier John Brumby to invite Victorians to submit their ideas for a new series of plates.

Vintage car enthusiast Peter Hibbert said: "It would be great to see something creative." Mr Hibbert, a member of a number plate collectors' club, owns one of the oldest number plates in Victoria - registration "154" from the 1920s.

That plate's not just old, it's valuable, worth about $100,000.
