DVLA MAKES BIG DATA SECURITY PUSH

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has undergone a major push to improve the security of its data.


In its annual report for 2008/09, the agency explained how a number of controls had been introduced during the past financial year to improve both electronic and physical security.

"All laptops are now encrypted, the use of memory sticks has been banned, and is technically enforced, and information issued on CD to customers is fully encrypted," the report said.

The DVLA also said it made a strategic change to ensure that all data is issued or shared via a secure electronic link, rather than by a portable media device. It added that a "strategic solution" has been delivered to accelerate this activity.

"Information can now only be downloaded onto approved removable storage devices that are encrypted and strictly controlled. These devices are only issued on production of a business case approved by the head of information security or the CEO," it said.

Physical security at the DVLA's Swansea headquarters has also been upgraded. The HQ now has a layered security approach and improved physical access control. In addition, some of the more sensitive areas are now controlled with biometric access control. The agency said the use of this technology will be widened as it provides "significantly enhanced control".

Noel Shanahan, the DVLA's chief executive, explained in the report's foreword that the agency dealt with 110 million transactions a year and kept data on 43 million drivers and 34 million vehicles.

"The agency continues to lead the government's Service Transformation Agenda with its electronic services for the public, winning more awards and recognition for innovation, service and delivery," he added.
