MOTOR TRADE INSURERS WARN OF ROGUE PLATE TRADERS

Quote Me Today, one of the U.K's leading providers of motor trade insurance are warning consumers to be vigilant, in the wake of reports from the DVLA of a crack down on rogue licence plate traders selling copied registrations.

Those found guilty of supplying the plates will face severe penalties, which could include prosecution and a fine of up to Pounds Sterling 5,000. Those who have purchased the plates are also being warned that they could have them seized and therefore lose any money spent. The DVLA is working with the police, Trading Standards and the courts to protect motorists from having their license plates cloned and to ensure that rogue suppliers are brought to justice.

In many cases, these copied number plates are used to hide the identity of a stolen vehicle, or cars which have been used in a crime. The DVLA has already prosecuted a number of suppliers for supplying fraudulent plates and failing to comply with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) regulations of 2001. This is following the introduction of laws last year, which gave the DVLA the power to prosecute traders who break the law.

Noel Shanahan, DVLA Chief Executive said: "Our enforcement officers are working closely with the Police and Trading Standards to identify and prosecute rogue dealers while also helping legitimate suppliers to meet their requirements." "Many people have been caught out by these rogue traders and have lost thousands of pounds, so it is imperative that before parting with your money you make these checks. If you are at all suspicious, you should walk away and notify the police immediately."
