US man fined $20,000 for personal number plate

Scottie Roberson, 38, chose the plate with seven X's to pay homage to his 'Racer X' nickname when he built custom cars - but it falls foul of traffic rules in the city of Birmingham where it indicates a car without a number plate.

Roberson said the mix-up has led him to get as many as 10 tickets in a day. Traffic Engineer Gregory Dawkins said the city may change the system to keep Roberson from receiving more tickets.

When Birmingham parking patrols find cars without license plates parked illegally or at expired meters, they enter seven X's in place of the plate number, city officials said. The parking citation form calls for a plate number, and the practice is to use X's when no number is available.
