BIN LORRY WITH PERSONLISED NUMBER PLATE

PERSONALISED car number plates are usually the mainstay of rich businessmen and footballers.

However, residents in North Devon may have been surprised to see a bin lorry in the area with a personalised plate reading "N4 DDC."

The Journal asked North Devon Council, which is responsible for waste and recycling collection, where the plate came from and why it was necessary.

Rex Bassett, service manager for refuse and recycling, said: "The works and recycling service has one vehicle with a personalised registration plate.

"This was bought back in 2004 and registered to one of our trade waste collection lorries, as part of a drive to promote our commercial trade waste service. This service helps offset some of our domestic waste collection costs.

 "Earlier this year, the trade lorry was taken out of operation, with the registration plate transferred to one of our new refuse collection vehicles."

The council did not indicate how much the personalised plate cost but private plates can cost anything from £245 up to £3,000 plus.
