NEW PHONE NUMBER FOR EASIER ROAD TAX RENEWALS

The DVLA has a new, easy-to-remember number for its 24-hour road tax telephone hotline. The Vehicle Tax Line can now be reached on: 0300 1234 321.

How it works

The DVLA is trying to make it easier for motorists to renew their car tax

The service enables you to renew your road tax without taking a trip to the Post Office.

It works by checking your vehicle details against insurance and MOT databases; assuming these are both up to date your tax disc will be sent out to you without the need for you to physically show your proof of insurance and MOT to anyone.

The Post Office service does, of course, continue if you’d rather queue. Alternatively, you can go online : http://direct.gov.uk/taxdisc.

According to the DVLA , more than half of September 2009's vehicle tax renewals were carried out either by phone or online, so it’s already proving a popular alternative.

Improving its service

Andrew Rhodes, DVLA’s Director of Products and Services, said: ‘We listened when our customers told us they wanted to have the option to interact digitally with DVLA, and we are constantly aiming to improve our services. By providing a new memorable renewal number we hope to make it even easier for motorists to tax their vehicle.’

The old 0870 number for the Vehicle Tax Line carries on in parallel with the new 0300 number for the time being, so that anyone referring to older leaflets or other literature will still be able to get through.

Calls to the new number are charged at geographical rates, the same as any other 01 or 02 number (mobile phone costs may vary; check with your service provider), and each call should take about four minutes.

The new Vehicle Tax Line number is: 0300 1234 321.
