Pembrokeshire Roads Policing Unit is currently cracking down on illegal number plates.

As part of a national campaign the unit is targeting vehicles with plates that are not the right size, the wrong colour, written in italics, or damaged. A spokesman for the team explained that these are the most common features which make number plates illegal.

Drivers found will illegal number plates will be fined on the spot.

Plates where letters and numbers have been rearranged or misrepresented can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and can even mean the vehicle failing its MOT or the registration to be withdrawn.

"Vehicles registered on or after January 1 1973 must be fitted with number plates which arethe correct colour - white on the front and yellow on the rear with black characters and displaying a BSAU mark.

"Drivers need to comply with the law to ensure accurate eye witness accounts can be made of motoring and crime incidents that occur.' For more information and correct examples of number plates please go to
