POLICE TARGET TR3NDY CAR REG PLATES Personalised numberplates are the ultimate fashion accessory, with some motorists in Lancashire paying in excess of £250,000 for the privilege. But next week Lancashire Police will be cracking down on drivers who illegally misrepresent or manipulate their licence plates. Police and transport chiefs say Operation Larch is essential to allow them to effectively tackle crime, because ANPR technology and speed cameras are unable to detect various fonts and changes to letter and number formations. But the boss of Lancashire's only registration plate seller has criticised the DVLA for auctioning plates he says are "clearly guesting for manipulation". Steve Jackson, of NewReg.com, said: "I fully support the operation and understand why they need to do it. "But it has to be stressed the DVLA issue all of these registration plates, including some that could clearly tempt motorists into manipulating them. "At the moment I have plates such as CLA 55 which do not require any manipulation. But if you look at the upcoming DVLA numberplate auction they stock things liken AAL 4N which a buyer could be tempted to change to A AL4N with a rivet or space between the As. He added: "I think the police have a difficult job ahead of them if DVLA are to supply these plates that are clearly guesting for manipulation. "There is a grey area with some fonts that needs to be addressed. Some fonts that used to be legal, now aren't. "I support getting rid of ridiculous flowery fonts and encouraging motorists to display their plates legally – but the responsibility lies with other people too. "The police should target the companies that are prepared to print the illegal numberplates." Previously, motorists have used a variety of methods to manipulate licence plates including placing rivets between letters, either to space or form another letter. They have also been tempted by the realm of internet companies willing to "personalise" plates with a selection of fonts and pictures.
