CARTOON characters, animals and birds and even one decorated with dripping blood - these are just some of the illegal number plates seized by North Yorkshire Police.

They were just some of the 44 vehicle number plates which officers took action against as part of a nationwide week-long crackdown.

Operation Larch was launched on January 28 in conjunction with the force's own ongoing road safety campaign, Operation Helical 2. The crackdown was launched in response to growing concerns over the number of people using unlawful registration plates to try to stop road-side cameras, such as speed cameras or the the police's effective Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, from being captured. Inspector Chris Charlton, head of roads policing, said: "Some of the number plates we discovered were simply dumbfounding, not to mention highly unlawful.

"As well as the more outrageous ones displaying cartoon characters, animals, birds and, of course, the one with a blood pattern dripping onto the plate, there were other examples with just the driver's first name or surname, and even some with letters and numbers in the style of German and Austrian number plates."

He said illegal alterations range from changes to plate layout, use of non-standard fonts, the use of tape, screws and other objects to obscure plates, to more sophisticated methods such as stolen or cloned number plates.

He said the operation was used by police as an opportunity to further identify links between the use of such number plates and criminal activity.

"A vehicle is often an integral part of a criminal's toolkit and registration plates will be tampered with in an attempt to avoid detection," he added. "By focusing our efforts on this problem through Operation Larch, and our own ongoing Operation Helical 2, we are able to crack down on travelling criminals by denying them the use of the roads, as well as providing a more detailed picture of the link between this type of offence and broader criminal activity."

The offending motorists were dealt with through the Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme (VDRS) and handed fixed penalty notices.

Offences can result in a fine of up to £1,000, the registration mark being withdrawn without compensation and the offending vehicle failing its MOT test.

The Press told earlier this week how more than 17 motorists have been caught speeding in North Yorkshire every day since police launched Operation Helical 2 on December 1, 2007. They have also arrested 65 people for a range of motoring and other offences.

The law states that:

* You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers

* Characters must not be moved from one group to the other - for example A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC

Offences may result in any or all of the following:

* A fine of up to £1,000

* The registration mark may be withdrawn without compensation

* The vehicle may fail an MOT.
