RECENT NEWS ON REGISTRATION NUMBERS
 
1 in 10 men and 1 in 20 women have a cherished registration number on their car, according to a recent survey.

In current times, more people than ever seem to be prepared to pay a little bit more in order to spruce up their car with a personal touch, and it's attracting people from all walks of life.

Though we have experienced a recession, it seems that the number plate business was not affected. This individual touch is becoming affordable for more and more people.

Last year the Government netted £83.1 million after selling 256,000 numbers, and the total amount raised since the DVLA started selling registration numbers in 1989, is £1.7 billion. Therefore, the personalised number plate industry is clearly a big business for the Treasury.

The DVLA advertise around 36 million registration numbers that have never been purchased before, and the most prestigious numbers are put under the hammer at their regular auctions. Some exceptionally attractive numbers can reach bids of hundreds of thousands of pounds, for example, in March 2009, ‘1 D' sold for £285,000 on the hammer! (This would have had VAT and auction fees on top aswel!)

This weeks DVLA auction has seen DH11 LON sell for £61,000, 55 O for £36,000, JO11 NNY for £24,000 and 99 MAC for £14,200, all hammer prices.

There was once an ‘Elvis' number in the DVLA auction and the hall was full of bidders dressed as Elvis!

Personalised number plates are all about fun, but they can be a good investment too. I bet you have seen some fun numbers on your travels? Like ‘2 BE' and ‘NOT 2B'!

Julie, from Sedgley spoilt herself to J600 LYB three years ago, which is currently displayed on her Saab 93 Convertible. Her daughter also had a number plate which marked her 18th birthday, and already she has had an offer of double the cost.
