CarReg’s Highest-Value Registration Sales
A look inside CarReg’s sales history of high-value private registrations
There is no single formula for determining the value of a private registration. Rarity, age, character count, memorable combinations, initials, names and simply how desirable a particular number feels to a buyer can all play a part.
But perhaps the most useful measure of value is what somebody has actually paid.
With that in mind, CarReg has compiled a list of some of the highest-value registrations it has successfully sold over the years. The list combines CarReg-owned stock with commission sales, where CarReg has acted on behalf of private owners to find a buyer.
The actual transaction prices are not disclosed. Private registration sales are often confidential transactions between buyer and seller, so the purpose of this list is to show the relative order of the sales achieved by CarReg, rather than publish the individual prices.
Shorter really can mean more valuable
At the top of the list are some of the shortest and rarest registration formats available in the UK.
The first few entries include 5 M, H 1, K 5, P 2 and O 6, all of which are exceptionally short registrations. Such marks are scarce by their very nature, with only a limited number of combinations ever having existed.
The leaderboard also demonstrates that there is a substantial difference between simply owning a personalised registration and owning one of the genuinely scarce combinations that collectors and buyers actively seek.
The appeal of 1x1 registrations
The early part of CarReg's leaderboard is particularly notable for the number of 1x1 registrations.
These are, quite simply, two-character registrations consisting of one letter and one number — such as K 5, P 2, O 6, 7 G and K 4.
Commonly referred to as 1x1 registrations by the registration trade and the public alike, they represent some of the shortest and scarcest combinations available. Their appeal is easy to understand: they are exceptionally concise, distinctive and instantly recognisable.
The desirability of an individual 1x1 can then vary considerably depending on the letter and number combination. A particularly sought-after letter, memorable number or combination with personal significance can make one registration substantially more desirable than another.
For CarReg, the presence of several 1x1 registrations near the top of its completed-sales leaderboard provides a useful illustration of the premium that can be attached to rarity and brevity.
Stock and commission sales
Another interesting feature of CarReg's sales data is that the leaderboard isn't made up exclusively of registrations owned by the company.
Some of the highest positions are occupied by commission sales — registrations owned by private individuals who instructed CarReg to market and sell their number on their behalf and in some cases other cherished number dealers who we advertise their inventory
This includes registrations such as 5 M, H 1, F 8, C 7, 8 T, 5 L, U 8, RW 1 and V 6.
Commission sales form an important part of the private registration market. Many desirable registrations are already privately owned, meaning that when they become available, they enter the secondary market rather than being released directly by the DVLA.
This also means that a registration appearing on the CarReg leaderboard isn't necessarily one that CarReg has owned. In many cases, the business has provided the marketing, valuation and sales service that connected an existing owner with a buyer.
It's not all about the shortest plate
While the very shortest registrations dominate the top of the leaderboard, the data becomes increasingly varied further down the list.
There are short dateless registrations, initials, name-related combinations and registrations where the numbers and letters together create a memorable appearance. Number 1's undoubtedly are considered the ultimate when pairing alongside one, two or three letters and will always be valued higher than the other single digits with the like for like letter combinations.
Registrations such as 1 MP, 1 TY, 9 MS, 22 N, MO 8, 9 CD, 9 AL and BAR 1 demonstrate the variety of formats that can feature in high-value sales.
Further down the list are longer and more personalised combinations including JAC 1K, LYN 2, CEL 1A, JIL 1, F1 ASH, HWC 1, MAS 11, MEL 9 and MR57 NGH.
These registrations may not have the extreme scarcity of a 1x1, but their appeal can come from the way the letters and numbers work together to create a name, initials, word or recognisable combination.
This is an important point when looking at registration values: character count is one factor, but it isn't the only factor.
The value of names and initials
Personalisation is one of the reasons the registration market contains such a wide variety of valuable combinations.
A short registration may appeal primarily because of its rarity, while another can become highly desirable because it resembles a person's initials, surname, business name or another recognisable word.
For example, registrations such as 1 DJR, 1 JSR, FH 2, JIL 1, F1 ASH and MEL 9 have obvious potential for personal interpretation.
The market therefore operates across several different categories. Collectors may be interested in rarity and historical significance, while individual buyers may be looking for something that has a direct connection to their own name, initials, business or interests.
A changing market
The registration market has changed considerably over the decades.
Some of the most interesting evidence comes from comparing historic sales with more recent transactions. Registrations that changed hands many years ago can now be worth considerably more, particularly where they belong to scarce formats.
For that reason, CarReg has separated a small number of historic sales completed before 2016 from the main leaderboard.
These include SB 9, D 41, 19 B, 55 V and 90 B.
They remain important parts of CarReg's sales history, but their original transaction values are not directly comparable with much more recent sales. Market conditions, buyer demand and the wider value placed on personalised registrations have all changed over time.

The list includes both Stock — registrations owned by CarReg — and Commission — registrations sold by CarReg on behalf of private owners.

Historic Sales – pre 2016
As these registrations were sold before 2016, their original sale prices would place them towards the bottom of the main list, so as their historical sale prices aren't directly comparable with the more recent sales, they have been kept separately. However, given their short formats and scarcity, their current market value could place them much higher in a modern comparison. Here is just a small selection of notable sales from yesteryear that would have achieved much more significant values if sold during the modern era.

| 7 B | Stock |

A leaderboard based on completed sales
Unlike a list of advertised registrations, this leaderboard is based on completed transactions through CarReg.
That distinction matters. An asking price represents what a seller is looking to achieve, while a completed sale provides evidence that a buyer and seller actually agreed on a transaction.
The figures behind these sales remain confidential, but the order provides an interesting snapshot of some of the most valuable registrations to have passed through CarReg.
From ultra-short 1x1 registrations to initials, names and distinctive combinations, the data also demonstrates that there is no single route to creating a highly valuable private registration.
Rarity creates scarcity. Demand creates value. And the sales themselves provide the data.
