Do you have to retain the existing reg?
No, not unless the existing registration is a cherished or personalised number which you may have purchased in the past or has some monetary value. If you are unsure, then you can request a valuation from a cherished number company like ourselves. If the reg is standard issue, eg HY21 XKU then there is no requirement to retain it and DVLA effectively store it against your vehicle record for later use once you transfer the new personalised car reg on to the vehicle. If you do need to retain the existing registration the cost to do so is £80 and can be done online at GOV.UK
