Do I have to display yellow (rear) and white (front) number plates? I've seen vehicles with black plates and silver letters.
A: For most vehicles, yes — UK law requires white plates with black characters at the front, and yellow plates with black characters at the rear. However, vehicles registered before 1 January 1980 (or those registered later but built before that date and officially classed as historic) are allowed to display black plates with silver or white characters. These are typically seen on classic or vintage vehicles.
All number plates supplied by CarReg comply with current DVLA regulations, including vintage-style plates where applicable.
