Exciting New Releases for 2026
Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year for vehicle registration plates. There will be two major new series releases that car buyers and enthusiasts alike should be aware of.
The 26 Series
The 26 Series was released in November 2025 and is set to be the identifier for new vehicles hitting the roads from 1st March 2026. This series will introduce a variety of plates that will take the form of AB26 ABC along with many other combinations. The "26" in the middle acts as the year identifier, making it easy for motorists to indicate the age of their vehicle. This is a fantastic opportunity for those looking to get ahead of the curve and secure a registration plate that reflects a new era in automotive design. These plates can be an ideal way to commemorate an important event such as a marriage or birth of a child. Mr J & Mrs K Doyle, married in , may go for something such as JK26 DOY, or Baby Leo Smith born in 2026, their parents may buy LS26 LEO. The possibilities are endless.
The 76 Series
Later in the year, the 76 Series will make its debut in June 2026. This series will cater to new vehicles registered from 1st September 2026. With millions of combinations available, this release will offer plates such as ME76 ALS and AR76 NAL, among many others. The anticipation for these new series is high, as they are part of a longstanding tradition dating back to the introduction of the current style plates in September 2001 with the 51 Series.
October's A-H Prefix Release
As we plan for the future, CarReg is also looking ahead to October 2026, when an exciting release will take place featuring plates with prefix year letters ranging from A (1983) to H (1990). This release will comprise around 230,000 plates, featuring combinations like A30 AJS, D31 JAY, and E33 MMS.
These plates will not only appeal to those who appreciate the nostalgia associated with older registration format (1983-2001) and prefer the shorter 5 or 6 characters associated with prefix numbers making them a popular choice for personalisation.
