By Jason Wilkes, Expert & CEO of CarReg UK

As we enter a new year, the UK number plate industry is moving faster than ever. Between the upcoming March "26" registration release and ongoing debates regarding plate aesthetics, the team at CarReg are receiving a record number of inquiries already.

I want to clear the air on the legality of 4D plates, reveal what the DVLA is "censoring" for 2026, and explain why the market for private registrations is currently shifting toward high-end investments.

1. Are 4D and 3D Number Plates Still Legal?

The short answer is YES. Despite rumors circulating on social media, 3D (Gel) and 4D (Laser-cut) plates remain road legal in the UK in 2026, meeting the DVLA regulations BS AU 145e standard.

However, the rules are strict. To stay on the right side of the law (and pass your MOT), your 4D plates must meet these four criteria:

  • Solid Black Only: Characters must be a single, solid shade of black. "Neon" backings, carbon fiber effects, and "ghost" two-tone styles are now illegal.
  • The Charles Wright Font: The font must be the standard UK typeface with legal spacing.
  • Non-Reflective Characters: While the plate background must be reflective, the raised 4D letters themselves must not be.
  • Supplier Markings: Every plate must display the manufacturer’s postcode and the British Standard code in the bottom corner.

Tip: At CarReg, we verify every 4D plate we manufacture to ensure it is ANPR-compliant. Beware of "show plate" sellers who don't follow these safety standards - Suppliers must be DVLA registered.

2. The Rise of the 'Green Flash' Retrofit

If you drive an Electric Vehicle (EV), 2026 is the year of the "Green Flash." We are seeing a massive trend in owners of older EVs retrofitting their plates to include the green vertical strip.

  • The Benefit: Many UK cities are now using the green flash to grant access to restricted lanes or offer discounted parking.
  • The Law: You can only display the green flash if your vehicle is 100% zero-emission. Adding a green flash to a hybrid or diesel vehicle is a legal offense.

Quick Checklist: Is Your Plate Legal?

  1. [ ] Is the font Charles Wright 2001?
  2. [ ] Are the characters Solid Black (no patterns)?
  3. [ ] Does it have the BS AU 145e mark?
  4. [ ] Is the spacing original (not moved to spell a word)?
  5. [ ] Does it have the Supplier Postcode?

3. The 2026 ‘Naughty List’: DVLA Banned Plates Revealed

The countdown to March 1st, 2026, has begun. With nearly 8 million new registrations hitting the database, the DVLA censor has already been busy.

For the '26' series, over 400 combinations have been withheld to avoid offence or political sensitivity. Some notable bans include:

  • Conflict & Politics: Combinations like RU26 UKR, GA26 AZA, and JE26 HAD have been suppressed due to current global sensitivities.
  • Aggressive Terms: Plates resembling words like "Terror" (TE26 ROR) or "Bomb" (B26 OMB) will not be issued.
  • The Rude Classics: As always, any plate starting with BJ26 has been automatically blocked, alongside combinations like OR26 ASM.

Missed out on a specific name? Don't worry. Our Unique Search Tool can often find "clever" alternatives that the DVLA hasn't flagged, giving you a similar look without the ban. We also have plates in stock that have previously "slipped the net" like OR62 ASM.

4. Number Plates as a 2026 Investment Asset

In an era of economic fluctuation, "Short & Dateless" plates have proven to be remarkably stable assets. We are seeing a 15% year-on-year increase in buyers looking for investment-grade registrations.

  • What’s in demand? Single letters, single numbers, and 2-letter/1-number combinations are the "Gold Standard."
  • Why now? Unlike a car, a private plate never devalues through mileage or wear. It is a finite asset that only becomes rarer over time.

Final Word from Jason
