All You Need To Know About Personalised & Private Number Plates - Quick Guides & DVLA Information
Welcome to CarReg’s quick guides — straightforward help for transferring, retaining and understanding private number plates in the UK.
These guides are based on real experience. We’ve been dealing with number plates since 1988, so this isn’t theory — it’s how things actually work day to day with the DVLA.
If you’re moving a plate to another car, keeping one for later, or just trying to understand the process, you’ll find the key steps below without any unnecessary jargon.
What can you do with a private number plate?
- Transfer it from one vehicle to another
- Keep it on retention for future use
- Assign it to a vehicle you own
- Sell it if it has value
- Buy one as a gift or investment
- Use it to promote a business
Before you start
Not every plate can be transferred, and not every vehicle qualifies. That’s where some people get caught out.
As a rule, the vehicle needs to be properly registered with the DVLA, and the registration itself can’t make the car look newer than it is (you can not put Y123 ABC on a vehicle registered 1980).
If you’re unsure, it’s always better to check first — it can save time and avoid problems later.
Quick answers
How much does it cost to transfer?
The standard DVLA fee is £80 for most transfers or retentions.
How long does it take?
Online transfers are often quick — sometimes instant — but allow a few days just in case.
Do I need the V5C?
Yes, in most situations you’ll need the logbook for the vehicle receiving the plate.
Can I keep a plate for later?
Yes, that’s what a retention (V778) is for.

Common questions
Are transfers instant?
Some are, yes — especially online — but others can take a few days depending on the situation.
Should I remove my plate before selling a car?
If you want to keep it, definitely. It’s much easier to sort it beforehand.
Can I put any plate on any car?
No — the plate can’t make the car look newer than it actually is, and the vehicle must meet DVLA rules.
Need a hand?
