How Long Does a Number Plate Transfer Take?
Most number plate transfers in the UK are completed within a few minutes to a few days, depending on how the application is made and the circumstances involved.
If everything is straightforward and done online, many transfers are actually instant. However, there are situations where it can take longer, so it’s worth knowing what to expect.
Typical Transfer Times
In our experience, here’s how long transfers usually take:
- Online transfer (DVLA): often instant or within a few minutes
- Standard cases: 1 to 3 working days
- More complex transfers: up to 5 working days
- Postal applications: 1 to 2 weeks
Most customers are surprised at how quick it is now compared to years ago. The DVLA system is much faster, especially for straightforward transfers.
When a Transfer Can Be Instant
A transfer can happen almost immediately if:
- The application is done online
- The vehicle details match DVLA records exactly
- The vehicle is taxed (or SORN where applicable)
- The MOT is valid (if required)
- There are no recent changes to the vehicle or keeper
When everything lines up, you’ll usually get confirmation straight away and can fit your new plates almost immediately.
What Can Slow Things Down?
Not every transfer is instant. Delays tend to happen when something doesn’t quite match up.
The most common reasons we see are:
- Recent change of keeper on the vehicle
- Vehicle details not matching DVLA records
- MOT expired or close to expiry
- Vehicle not taxed or SORN correctly
- Private sale where paperwork is still being updated
- Lease or finance company involvement
Leased vehicles in particular can take longer, as there’s often a third party handling the process.
Transfers Involving Retention
If the number plate is already on a V778 retention document, the transfer is usually quick.
In many cases, assigning a plate from retention to a vehicle can be done instantly online, provided everything is in order.
Postal Transfers (Slower Option)
If you apply by post using DVLA forms, the process takes longer.
You’re typically looking at:
- 1 to 2 weeks for completion
- Longer during busy periods or if documents need checking
For this reason, most people now use the online service where possible.
When Can I Fit My New Plates?
You should only fit your new number plates once the transfer has been officially confirmed by the DVLA.
In online cases, this confirmation often comes immediately. For other transfers, wait until you receive confirmation before changing anything.
Real-World Advice
If you’re planning to sell or change your vehicle, don’t leave the transfer until the last minute.
We see it quite often — someone sells a car and only then realises they needed to move the plate first. At that point, it can get complicated or even lost.
Give yourself a few days buffer, especially if timing matters.
