How To Buy A Private Number Plate (UK Guide)
Buying a private number plate in the UK is straightforward once you understand how it works. You can buy from a dealer or through the DVLA, then assign the registration to your vehicle when you’re ready.
Most people are surprised at how simple the process is these days. The key is knowing what you’re buying and how it gets onto your car.
Where Can You Buy a Private Number Plate?
There are two main ways to buy a private number plate:
- From a dealer – usually the quickest and easiest option, with access to a wide range of plates. CarReg has over 80 million plates to choose from and actually holds many in stock (avoiding delays with third parties).
- From the DVLA – either direct sales or auctions of unissued registrations. Please note that the DVLA no longer hold sought after plates like 8 JB, 9 AM, JB 88 etc. The DVLA do not sell previously issued registrations.
Dealers tend to offer more choice, including previously owned (often more valuable) registrations.
How the Buying Process Works
In most cases, buying a private number plate follows a simple process:
- Search for a registration that suits you
- Agree a price and complete the purchase
- Receive a certificate (usually a V750 or V778)
- Assign the registration to your vehicle
- Fit your new number plates once confirmed
You don’t need to assign the plate straight away — it can be held for future use.
What Documents Are Involved?
When you buy a number plate, you’ll normally receive one of the following:
- V750 Certificate of Entitlement – for newly issued registrations
- V778 Retention Document – for registrations already held on retention
These documents prove your right to use the registration and are needed when assigning it to a vehicle.
How Much Does a Private Number Plate Cost?
Prices vary widely depending on the registration.
Some plates start from under £200, while shorter or more desirable combinations can run into the thousands — or much more.
On top of the purchase price, you’ll normally pay:
- The DVLA transfer fee (currently £80)
- Any dealer fees (if applicable)
- The cost of having the physical number plates made
Can I Put the Plate on Any Vehicle?
Not always. The main rule is that the registration must not make the vehicle appear newer than it is.
For example, you can’t put a newer-style plate on an older car.
The vehicle must also:
- Be registered with the DVLA
- Be taxed or declared SORN
- Have a valid MOT if required
How Long Does It Take?
Assigning a number plate is often very quick.
- Online assignments can be instant
- Some take 1 to 3 working days
- Postal applications take longer
Once the DVLA confirms the assignment, you can fit your new plates straight away.
Buying as a Gift
Private number plates are often bought as gifts.
You can add a nominee to the certificate, which allows the plate to be assigned to someone else’s vehicle when they’re ready.
This makes them popular for birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A few things to watch out for:
- Leaving the assignment until after selling your vehicle
- Buying a plate that doesn’t suit the vehicle’s age
- Not checking all fees before purchasing
- Delaying paperwork and risking expiry of documents
Most issues are easily avoided with a bit of planning.
