Does the DVLA buy & sell personalised or private number plates?
The DVLA sells previously unissued personalised registrations, including both prefix and current formats, directly through its official website. It also runs cherished number plate auctions where some dateless registrations are offered. However, popular and highly sought-after plates such as 8 JB, 8 MB, 9 AM, and 66 AM were sold many years ago and are no longer available from the DVLA.
Most of these exclusive registrations are now owned by private individuals or held by number plate dealers and brokers, who sell them on behalf of clients. The DVLA does not buy back, re-sell, or trade in any previously issued registrations or number plates, so do not operate within the secondhand market place at all.
